Common Loon Wolfpack!

My lake in northern Minnesota is quite deep, and the common loons often meet near the deeper spots and hunt together to try and catch ciscoes (whitefish). Such was the case this morning … final day of June. The loon wolfpack let me float to within ten yards … ignoring me as they would work together to obtain their breakfast (video link for email subscribers)

And some still images …

  1. My husband and I watched about 200-250 loons do this the week before labor day in the boundary waters in 1994 or 95. It was an amazing and incredible thing to witness.

    1. I once experienced a similar sight with an amazing number of loons … easily 50. The birds were on a very remote, 200 foot deep trout lake … also with ciscos and whitefish. The time of year was fall and loons were starting to clock in preparation for the southern migration. For all I know, it may have been a flock passing through from further north. Regardless, it was fun to watch.

  2. Was the wolf pack successful? Your photos and video show no fish present.
