Haida Gwaii!

As of an hour ago, Molly and I have biked about 575 miles on this trip. We only have one day of serious cycling left, tomorrow. Here is our trip diary.

In the meantime Haida Gwaii has yielded up a new lifer, Black Turnstones. In addition I got some better images of Steller’s Jays.

Cycling Heaven … and a Lifer!

Oh wow, and I repeat … oh wow! We were in cycling heaven for bike touring today (55 mile ride). We had all of the below items occur:

1. Perfect smooth pavement
2. Wide shoulders
3. Light traffic
4. Flat as a pancake for 31 miles
5. Nice tailwind
6. Bight, blue skies without a single cloud
7. Mountains on either side of the Skeena River
8. A lifer bird for me (Steller’s Jay)

Here are just a few images, including my Steller’s Jay. After 471 miles of riding, we have reached Prince Rupert and the Pacific Ocean. Tomorrow we take the ferry out to the island chain of Haida Gwaii.

The Mighty Skeena, Ticket to the Sea

For the last two days we have been cycling along the Skeena River in British Columbia. This river cuts through the Coastal Mountain Range, and the scenery is dramatic. However, when touring by bicycle, the word “cutting” is loosely used. While we are descending to the sea, there pleny of climbs.

Enjoy a few photographs of the mighty Skeena and the surrounding area. I have also included a map at the end of this post showing our route. All three photos were taken yesterday morning. It was a glorious ride … 40+ miles between civilization, even a building of any kind.
