Day 293: Man vs Squirrel in Support of Birds!

During this year long photography project, I have rarely posted photos taken at my own feeders. I actually have a great locations for feeders here in the Northwoods. I live across from Amity Creek and at the edge of a forest. The bird habitat is excellent.

This morning I had a pileated woodpecker in my suet feeder, while two squirrels, both a grey and black squirrel, looked upon the scene with desire!

Day 292: Blizzard Birds!

We had quite the winter storm. I decided to continue my photography assignment of attempting to show birds during the storm, and how the birds ARE cold. These two photos were taken at the end of Park Point of some herring gulls. I believe it shows them braving the elements!

We humans enjoy the elements. Here are some more photos from today … the stream (Amity Creek) across from my house, a pic from my first Nordic Ski of the season, and some surfers at the mouth of the Lester River on Lake Superior (about 1/3 of a mile away from my home).

Squirrels Use Bear to Defeat Yankee Flipper!

Alas … my Yankee Flipper is no more! What the squirrels could not destroy, my friendly black bear was able to accomplish. My local squirrels were tired of being flipped off my feeder and enlisted the help of a black bear to defeat their nemesis.

However, this story has a happy ending as the folks from Droll Yankees have replaced the plastic cylinder on my flipper w/o charge. Thus, watch out squirrels on northern Minnesota … within days you will be flipped one more. Life is good!

Here is a photo of said bear going after some of my other feeders a few weeks ago.
