Days 223 to 225: Road Trip Birds

Molly and I have reached the Glacier National Park area which is where will start our own Glaciers to the Sea self – supported bike tour. The past few days have seen us drive over 1,400 miles to our bicycle starting point. Obviously a 365 day project means while on the road I still had to get my daily bird photograph. Molly was great in terms of understanding that at a moments notice anywhere from Minnesota to Montana I might slam on the brakes and pull over to the shoulder in search of my bird … whether it was a red-tailed hawk hunting from a power pole or a killdeer hanging out in a prairie dog down. Thus, I bring you “road trip birds”

Days 220 to 222: The Birds of NorthStar Lake

Molly and I are slowly working our way west to start our Glaciers to the Sea Bike Tour. Our first stop on our drive to our bike tour starting point is our small cabin on NorthStar Lake near the Canadian border in northern Minnesota. Over the past three days we have enjoyed quiet time with friends, and of course … birds! As most of the song birds have already migrated south out of the area this Labor Day Weekend, I have focused myself on birds that utilize the lake itself to live and feed.

I was particularly pleased to photograph the bald eagle this morning. Three years ago the pine tree where are resident eagles had nested for over 20 years blew down in a big storm. This Summer a new pair moved into a nearbye white pine. Hopefully these two eagles will also raise many happy eaglets over the upcoming years just a few hundred yards from our cabin.

Days 217 to 219: Birds of the Aurora!

The past several nights have been fantastic for viewing and photographing the Northern Lights up here near the Canadian border in Minnesota. My total number of sleep hours remains small, but the fun quotient is HUGE! Obviously the 365 “Days” of bird photo project must be continued. Thus, here are my aurora birds!

However, before the Aurora bird photos, here is one of my photos from my Northern Lights night sessions (see next blog entry for many more). This particular photo has gone viral via Flickr Explore, and has had several thousands views so far in just a couple of hours.
