Day 088: Magnificent Mate Wanted!

Easter Morning dawned crystal clear after yesterday’s rain, and thus I took an early birding / photography walk which started shortly after sunrise. The birds in the Medicine Lake Wetlands were extremely happy and busy about the business of finding a mate! As brunch was not till 10:00 am, I hiked for three hours. Here’s the list of birds I saw … of which many you will find photographs below:

  • Bluebirds
  • Buffleheads
  • Blue Jays
  • Canadian Geese
  • Cardinals
  • Chickadees
  • Cedar Waxwings
  • Coots
  • Downy Woodpecker
  • Great Horned Owl
  • Hairy Woodpecker
  • Mallards
  • Mourning Doves
  • Osprey
  • Red Breasted Nuthatches
  • Red Merganser
  • Red-Shafted Flicker
  • Red-Winged Blackbirds
  • Robins
  • Seagulls
  • Snowy Egret
  • Song Sparrows
  • Tree Swallows
  • Wood Ducks

Perhaps the most amazing site of the morning was when a bluebird attacked a tree swallow which was trying to take over the bird house. They ended up “wrestling” and “pecking” just a a few feet away from me. I was so surprised and startled I missed the photo opportunity!

Day 087: Photo Walk in the Wetlands

Molly and I traveled 175 miles south to the Minneapolis area for Easter, which  meant discovering there were parts of Minnesota w/o snow and where Spring had Sprung! Before thunderstorms hit I took a quick walk in the Medicine Lake Wetlands (French Park). It was run to see birds which had finally returned north … many focused on finding a mate!

Day 086: Peaceful Good Friday Morning on the North Shore

I arrived at Split Rock Lighthouse twenty minutes before dawn this morning, and for the next two hours plus enjoyed a peaceful Good Friday morning enjoying God’s majesty. For this entire period I never saw another human being. It was me and the beauty of the Northland.

The conditions could not have been more perfect. After our storm of two days ago which dumped 8+ inches of new snow on the region, this morning was crystal clear with not even the slightest breeze. The temperature had fallen to 25F overnight. Thus, I was able to walk across the snow’s crust giving me easy access to fun and beautiful places.

After two hours hiking and photographing in Split Rock State Park, I drove south to Two Harbors, Minnesota where I captured today’s bird photograph … the latest in my Lighthouse and Birds Series!

I hope these photos taken Good Friday morning provide you some peace and enjoyment.
