Need Help with a Bird ID!

Need help with a bird ID. These guys just showed up in my feeder. I’ve never seen anything like this in northeastern Minnesota. It’s been a cold, harsh winter, and it’s bringing unusual birds into the feeder. Apparently they must be nocturnal.

Photo #1: My wife Molly first noticed the birds coming up the steps

Photo #2: The birds gathered around the feeder. Not sure they knew what to do.

Photo #3: Eureka! Two birds figured out how to get seed! Starvation averted.

  1. We believe that these are Taiwanize Red Throated Midget Empire Penquins.
You are very blessed to have such rare birds at your feeder!

  2. Richard, these are called April Fool Penguins. They come from Hong Kong. They are one of the few birds to have their place of origin printed on their bodies. If you examine them closely you will find the words ‘Made in Hong Kong’ somewhere.

  3. Hahahaha! Love this! (This type of behavior ….. not the penguins’ behavior btw 😉 ) is what happens in a hard winter I think.
