Ned and Nancy, my Northstar Lake Barred Owls have performed in a big way for my buddy Steve and me. In the past three days my cabin’s BirdNET-Pi station has recorded them 741 times. All we know is the owls have been extremely vocal … hooting most of the night and then even at times during the day. Given another pair of Barred Owls have a territory directly across the lake, this is an important time of year for owls to make it obvious what land a Barred Couple considers their own (Barred Owls do not migrate and mate for life). I took the image shown below by drone two summers ago, and it shows the wetlands / channel between sections of Northstar Lake. The channel appears to be the dividing line between the territories of the two owl families.
Anyhow … after a night with an amazing number of hoots, we followed the owl song shortly after sunrise. All these images were taken starting 15 minutes before sunrise through high noon. There will be one additional post about the Northstar Barred Owls which will cover late afternoon, sunset and the 9 pm hoot.
