This pileated woodpecker has been laughing at me all Summer and early Fall. If you have ever heard the cry of this particular kind of bird, you will understand me! However, now that the leaves have fallen in the northwoods, I was finally able to see my nemesis and take a photo!
Yesterday I featured darkness, both the birds and the night. Today I was out before dawn, and the sunrise was glorious. In both photos you can observe Canadian Geese swimming near the two bridges. The location is the Duluth Harbor on the western tip of Lake Superior. The older span is the InterState Bridge (circa 1895) which the newer bridge is the High Bridge / Blatnik Bridge. I can remember taking a drive across this bridge the first day it opened in 1962 (??).

Today was a day for darkness … black, but laced with color! The day started with a hike along the St. Louis River. The fruit trees (dogwood and crab apple) were attracting the black birds, but with injections of color! Later during the night, the Northern Lights spiced up the night sky! It’s good to live in the Northland!
