Day 127: A Hike on the North Shore of Lake Superior

This morning my wife and I headed up the North Shore of Lake Superior from Duluth. Although the weather was calm and peaceful at 6 am, the cold winter which still had Lake Superior’s water temperatures in the high 30’s on this late day in May meant fog was present out over the lake.

However as the day progressed the fog burned off, and depending upon how close one was to the lake, the weather ranged from 48F to 70F. We took a long hike in Split Rock State Park and enjoyed the cascades as the water flew down to Lake Superior.

Day 126: Cotton Mouth Chickadee

Everyone is busy after the long winter trying to get ready to raise a family. I found this black-capped chickadee out on Minnesota Point trying to pull some cotton (or fuzz) off the ground for its nest. The process was difficult!

Day 125: Kissin Cousins Robin and Wood Thrush

Most people may not know that the robin they see quite often in their front yard, has a close cousin, the wood thrush. The two birds are closely related (Wikipedia article). This morning, while on my daily “photo hike”, this robin landed on this fence and almost demanded I take a photograph of it! I agreed and took the photo. The framing was too good to pass up! Later on, I saw this wood thrush deep in a thicket. I was lucky to get an unobstructed photo.
