Day 108: Spring Finally Arrives?? Goldfinch

Nothing exotic about today’s bird, but given the weather we have had in northern Minnesota, it is nice to finally have a day where the sun shined, and the temperature approached 60F. Another sign of Spring is that our local goldfinches are finally gold! Winter is finally history except for a bit of snow in the deep woods underneath thick groves of pines.

Day 107: A French Kissing Flicker!

Well … maybe not French Kissing, but definitely some tongue! On a foggy day in northern Minnesota I actually had some neat bird photography opportunities. First this yellow-shafted flicker landed near me, and then these two red-breasted mergansers were so intent on swimming upstream in the fast water, they ignored me!

Day 106: New Neighbors!

The Winter of 2014 goes on, and on, and on …

The practical result of this fact is that except for waterfowl which are able to find open water on Lake Superior, very few other migrant birds have reached this far north. Thankfully, the local golf course’s ponds have finally melted. This afternoon I hiked through the woods over to Lester Park Golf Course. The ducks did not let me down!

Dear! Quick! Look! The new neighbors! (lesser scaups)
