Birds Behaving Badly! Pileated Woodpecker Fight

Why can’t we Northland residents just be friends?!

Yesterday Mr. Snowy Owl and some crows had a fight. Today it was Madam Pileated Woodpecker and a Red Squirrel having an altercation over who belonged in a certain tree. If anyone thinks taking photographs like this one are easy, they’re not! I watched this Pileated Woodpecker for over 1/2 hour in the 20F conditions. I had to first find a bird, and then slowly work my way closer without spooking the woodpecker. 99% of my visit with this bird was boring, but then bang!

Blizzard Birds

Take one nasty storm with 50 mph wind gusts and add one crazy photographer and what do you get? Blizzard birds! While most people would be inside on a day like today, I tried to deal with horrible photographic conditions and take a few photos. Tomorrow I plan on driving up to Sax-Zim Bog. The snow is supposed to end overnight with clearing skies around 6 am. I hope the end result will be ice / snow plastered trees. All the raptors including owls should be very hungry and hopefully hunting all day long with a backdrop of a deep blue sky.

Backyard Visitors: From Fluffy to Mr. Bear!

The back yard … how many of you spend time birding your own yard? This morning while I was away stalking a Red Fox and American Golden Plovers, my wife returned from her morning run. Molly is NOT a birder, but when she got back to our house, Fluffy was sitting on our deck and waiting for her! (Golden Crowned Kinglet). She thought Fluffy was cute  and took some photos!

Two nights ago Mr. Bear raided our feeders. This attack was just one of many over the past several days. In all four bird feeders have been damaged (two repaired). Only the damaged feeders now are out till Mr. Bear decides to hibernate. Even my wife thinks watching Mr. Bear is cool.

In short, do you spend time birding your own yard. The results can be amazing. Finally, browse over to my wife’s blog. While not a birder, she does write for Lake Superior Magazine. Her blog is Superior Footprints (as in Lake Superior).
