Before the thunderstorms rolled in this morning, I made a quick foray onto the Western Waterfront Trail. I immediately found a Catbird which for a change was not deep in a thicket. When the rains came, I drove home and worked on my Birds of Las Catalinas, Costa Rica web page.
Spring has arrived to the Northland, and a string of warm weather has trees budding and bugs starting to hatch. The birds are aware of this fact, and today the Western Waterfront Trail was finally a good place to hike! Flocks of Yellow-Rumped Warblers and Yellow Warblers made their presence known … in addition to many other birds. On warm days for the next 7+ days it should be fun to watch the warblers migrate through the region. I personally like parking at the end of 63rd Avenue West, and hiking the trail in both directions. The more traditional approach for the Duluth Audubon Walks is to park near the Munger Inn and walk Indian Point Campground.

Looking for love in all the wrong places! Sunday morning along the Western Waterfront Trail in Duluth I found the rare North American Darth Vader Bird (common grackle). At sunrise this bird was looking for a Mrs. Vader, but alas … he was spurned!

Now that I have returned to the Northland from Costa Rica, I have been making the rounds of my favorite birding locations and evaluating the status of the Spring migration. Apparently over the past two weeks cold weather slammed the migration to a stop, but the early migrants have been busy finding mates, building nests Great Blue Herons) … and in the case of Great Horned Owls … raising owlets!
