Fire and Ice … Dawn and Dark!

What a way to bookend a day … Ice Ducks at dawn, and the Aurora Borealis at midnight!

ICE!
Before dawn I went down to the big lake and positioned myself out on an ice flow in an attempt to take “ice flight” shots in the early morning light. There is a small stream that is underground for a few hundred yards just before emptying into Lake Superior near Lester River. The warm water attracts ducks during the winter.

FIRE!
Thought I would be going to bed after watching a movie with Molly, but Lady Aurora thought differently. My Aurora Borealis app sounded an alarm at 8 pm, and shortly before 9 pm I drove 35 minutes to Boulder Lake. Had to slog through knee deep snow for about 1/2 mile to reach my vantage point out on the ice. The temperature dropped from 13 to 7F by the time I left shortly before midnight. This image was taken a bit before 11 pm.

I will admit to being tired this afternoon. I was out of the house by 6 am to beat the sunrise, and did not call it quits till fifteen minutes after midnight. No complaints, just tired!

  1. Fantastic start and end photos. Wow.
Can you please share your aurora app with us? I would love to have that on my phone.
    Happy DST!

    1. Jeannette … Aurora Alert from Eagles Orbit (Android). On the previously mentioned Northern Lights page (access from menubar) I have more information on recommendations for both Android and iOS … as well as forecasting tools I use even when an alert is in progress.

  2. Wow!! I have 2 phenomenons I’d love to witness: northern lights and a clear moonless sky loaded with stars. Looks like you had both.!! What Northern lights app do you have? And where is Boulder Lake?did you tell us once before about this place and it’s lication? Is there a motel sort of close? Thanks. No rush. Thanks. Kathy

    1. There is a map to Boulder Lake near the bottom of my Northern Lights page accessed from this blog’s menu bar. From the Miller Hill Mall area of Duluth on Hwy#53 the drive would be about 1/2 hour. Even with staying down by the lake, the drive would not be much longer. Boulder Lake is a great viewing spot due to its dark skies … no cabins, just a state forest to the north. Although not quite as dark, there is a resort in Two Harbors (25 miles NE of Duluth) where one has nice views to the NE right from their guest rooms, Superior Shores Resort.
