Day 034: Purple Finch Buds

We descended two thousand today, and learned that Spring lives at lower elevations in the Rockies (5,750 feet). Found this purple finch singing and feeding on new tree buds. Back to magpies and crows tomorrow! The photo was a bit of a stretch for my telephoto lens as this finch was at the top of a very tall tree.

As I work through this project, the Digital Photography School has proven an excellent resource for continuing to learn about the process of taking pictures. Here is a great recent post of theirs which reviews some important considerations to which one should pay attention when taking photographs of birds.

Day 033: Magpie Morning

A quick look out the window early this morning revealed a brilliant sunrise might be in the offing. Thus, 40 minutes before dawn I ventured outside with my camera. Wow! It was worth getting windblown and cold. I hope you will agree.

Today’s bird … a magpie greeting the dawn

And Finally later today, not a magpie or crow!

Day 032: Mechanical Bird Tail!

Although I captured some photos of crows and magpies today … my normal subjects deep in the Winter time Rockies, I decided to try something a bit different for today’s bird photo, and a bit abstract. Thus, I waited till a few minutes after sunset and took photographs for about one half hour of jet contrails … mechanical birds … their tails (or contrails)! I’ll have to try this again someday when I’m on the Great Plains. A flat landscape seems to work better than mountains for capturing this idea, but it was still a fun photoshoot.
