Hawaii Big Island Mount Kilauea Volcano Eruption

What were you doing at 5:50 am this morning (for me long before before sunrise in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park)? I was watching the Mount Kilauea Volcano erupt! This was one of the most awe inspiring sights of my life.  As Molly (my wife) and I reached the overlook on foot seeing the eruption / lava field for the first time, we were both speechless. I watched for a long time with my binoculars before taking my first photograph. We stayed till five minutes after sunrise. While dawn was beautiful, light definitely subdued the vision.

Hawaii Big Island Nanawale Bay Surf

We are in Hawaii! The big island (Hawaii) has given us a huge hello. On the eastern side of the island heavy surf warnings were in effect till yesterday morning. Nanawale Bay is only 20 minutes from our guest house near Pahoa. The waves were pounding the shores yesterday afternoon (video links for email subscribers: one | two). I promise more about birds and our fantastic guest house in future posts!

Where are the Snowy Owls?

Project Snowstorm just published an article today which indicates this winter is the worst winter ever for Snowy Owl eBird sightings for which there is good data (since 2004). Sightings across North America are essentially a flat line (see below). Thus, I should be very happy to have seen two different Snowy Owls, multiple times. The article is definitely worth a read. Apparently not only are sightings way down this winter, but breeding success (or even attempts) in the Arctic was almost non existent last summer. With that note, I head off to Hawaii for 2+ weeks … our first ever visit to the island state. Molly and I have a small remote guest house up in the hills / forest on the big island of Hawaii.
