New Life … A Precious Gift!

Monday my third grandchild was born, Isabel!

It appears the animal kingdom also celebrated Isabel’s birth. Today while stretched out on the couch, a fawn looked in the living room window at me. Slowly getting out of the chair, I discovered triplets!

Amazingly enough just one hour before the deer family visit, I had photographers the common merganser family while on a bike along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Life is good … and in three’s (three grandchildren, three fawns, and nine merganser chicks or 3×3!)

Thankfully Isabel was born at the hospital, unlike her sister Mya (born at home). Must be something about Hoeg women. When our second child was born, my wife, Molly, went to the doctor’s office for a regularly scheduled appointment. The nursing staff asked my wife: “Don’t you realize you are in labor?” My wife’s answer: “No”. Carl Hoeg was born shortly thereafter. This exact scenario was repeated on Monday with my daughter Karen, and now her new daughter, Isabel. New life is precious!

The Last Photo! Drenched! Harry Times Two!

Last photo with this camera??? Hairy Woodpeckers x2 … the young birds are fledged.

I got caught in a huge thunderstorm while out hiking this afternoon. For 30 minutes I cowered deep in dense undergrowth and tryed to keep my camera dry. Ultimately I failed. Both the camera and I got drenched. After a hot shower I am now warm and dry; but the camera two hours later is doing strange things. My Canon SX60 turns on whenever it desires and gives me a non stop busy mode; in short it does not work.

I just ordered another camera via Amazon Prime. Hope I will be able to return the new camera, but research via the web seems to indicate my Canon SX60 is toast. I ordered a the slightly older SX50 refurbished model as a money saving mode.

My better half just told me (and I agree) that I have a very understanding wife. I have a very nasty habit of wrecking one camera per year … drop on ice … get caught in downpours … whatever.

Photography in the Fog!

Do damp, drizzly, foggy days keep you inside? If the answer is “yes”, you are missing some unique and challenging photographic opportunities. At this time of year in northern Minnesota fog is often present. Warm air from the south blows north and meets up with cold Lake Superior. Even though today is June 1st, the temperature of the deep blue water of Gitchee Goomie is still in the 30’s. The net effect is a fog factory.

Last week we had plenty to days with fog. Temperatures rarely broke 50 degrees, but I still spent lots of time outside with my camera. While like everyone else I love clear blue skies, in my part of the universe the sun now rises around 5 am. This means the “golden hour” is over before many people even awake for the day (not me). During the middle of the day, the bright sun makes fine photography a challenge … enter the foggy day!

Fog evens light out, and provides the opportunity for “disappearing act” images. Bright colors seem more vibrant on gloomy days. Unlike the golden hour which is at best 90 minutes long, the foggy conditions change constantly as the fog rolls in and out with the shifting wind.

Thus take your camera and venture outside! Here are just two of my foggy day photos from last week. A good time was had by all!
