Days 272 to 278: Duck Pond Fever!

Year 1

Birds attract more birds. While the northwoods have become rather barren in terms of birds as most of our feathered friends have flown south for the winter, one particular pond near me still is attracting lots of late migrants. Simply put, ducks like to hang out with other ducks. Find your local pond which doubles as a duck convention, and your viewing possibilities are enhanced … duck pond fever. In my local pond’s case, a resident flock of domestic geese and mallards server as the birds that attract their wild counterparts to their waters.

Day 262: South Wind Equals Resting Migratory Birds

Year 1,

Lake Superior is a BIG barrier to the migration of birds. Most birds hate to fly over large bodies of water, and thus they work their way down the north shore of Lake Superior over hundreds of miles to avoid flying out over the lake. With a headwind out of the south, most birds will rest and wait for better flight conditions. Such was the case with today’s two birds. In one instance, the snow goose had obviously been blown way off course from the rest of its flock and ended up with some Canadian Geese.

Days 217 to 219: Birds of the Aurora!

Year 1, ,

The past several nights have been fantastic for viewing and photographing the Northern Lights up here near the Canadian border in Minnesota. My total number of sleep hours remains small, but the fun quotient is HUGE! Obviously the 365 “Days” of bird photo project must be continued. Thus, here are my aurora birds!

However, before the Aurora bird photos, here is one of my photos from my Northern Lights night sessions (see next blog entry for many more). This particular photo has gone viral via Flickr Explore, and has had several thousands views so far in just a couple of hours.
